Creating a Company Culture Worth Being Thankful For

It’s Thanksgiving and we can’t help but be extremely thankful.  This year, we have gotten to meet a bunch of new and inspiring clients and create things that only existed in their wildest dreams.  We have also had the opportunity to hire new team members to our growing and expanding team, with no end in site.  Beneath all we have accomplished stands a solid foundation of a talented team and an awesome culture.

The Lucky Few

According to a recent Gallup Poll, 70% of Americans are disengaged from their jobs.  If we are using engagement as a barometer to gauge how much people enjoy their companies and the jobs they perform, then America as a whole is struggling.  To be engaged in one’s company is to have it occupy your attention, inspire you, manifest your creative energy, and produce your best work.

But we like to take it one step further at Taylor Digital. We believe that if you are engaged at work, if you are giving your best creative effort to the work while here in the office, then the evidence will be clear in your life outside of the office.  Our team is made up of talented developers, designers, marketing guru’s, search strategists, strategy officers, project managers, directors, administrative life-savers, and others.  But outside of these office walls, these same people are professional race car drivers, pastors, musicians, rock climbers, moms, dads, wives, and husbands…to name a few.

We are the 30% that is engaged in our work, and it shows both inside and outside the office.  Supporting one another in the work of being passionate humans who are engaged in the lives of others is part of our DNA.  We support, encourage, and high-five one another because we know–we are the lucky few.

Living Outside of the Box

Speaking of creativity, part of our DNA as a company is that we don’t live inside the box.  One of the mantras we work and live by is “If you can dream it, we can create it.”  This isn’t something we just say…we actually accomplish it.  Team collaboration is a core value of ours, and we don’t just implement solutions for our clients, we create solutions.  This year we have created amazing web applications for our clients that allow them to have proprietary advantages over their competition.  In fact, in some cases,  we were the third stop on their quest to find a digital agency because the other agencies had their thinking stuck in a box.

Dismantling the “usual” is part of our process, and a natural result of the process is collaboration.  We know and believe that it takes a unique expertise and perspective for us to live and think outside the box.  In fact, some of our biggest “aha!” moments have come from an unexpected viewpoint.  Living outside of the box allows for the light to shine on our blinds spots so that we can create solutions that are integrated, successful, and cover all the bases.

Providing Value, Being Valued

Because our collaborative efforts and creative solutions can only be possible with our team of experts, we are aware of the immense value that we provide to our clients.  With over 100 years of experience from our team, our clients receive the benefit of extracting knowledge from everyone on the team by proxy of our collaborative environment.  Value is another part of our DNA, but we don’t limit it to the value we provide to our clients.  We believe that when done correctly, value extends beyond what we bring to the client.

The hierarchy of position and title here at Taylor Digital has its place, but we are committed to leveling the playing field when it comes to our team. No matter what role a person holds, how long the person has worked with our company, or how new they are to a project, we acknowledge that every person has equal value.  And this is exactly why our collaborative environment works: everyone knows that she has a seat at the brainstorming table, and as a result, isn’t afraid to give advice, ask questions, or even ask for help.  The teamwork and value within our offices is palatable, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Committed to Vision

All of our out-of-the-box living, value, and collaboration is great, but would mean very little if it didn’t point to and fulfill our broader vision.  Our President and CEO excels in casting vision. Because he has a gift for understanding where we are and where we are headed, he can discern the right path for our company.  Like a compass, he is continually running our efforts, our processes, and our solutions through the lens of the vision to ensure that we stay on track.

Our vision is something we have deliberately and intentionally created, and then worked hard to keep it in place.  Focusing on the vision means setting boundaries and saying “yes” to the things that support this vision.  Keeping vision-directed boundaries has not always been easy. It’s come with hard choices, and a constant reorientation of company values. But, it’s been so worth it.

This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for our company and the culture that we have worked hard to create.  The fruit of our labor is, of course, happy clients and charts that go up and to the right, as well as a happy and engaged team.  We are grateful to be a part of a company that values people over profits, and even more grateful that we’ve been given both.
